All changes in the form happen first in the connective tissue structures.
The connective tissue, that literally "connects" all structures of the
body, is made of collagen fibers in a liquid surrounding. It has the
property of lengthening to take over and to forward guiding the loads, and
the capability of strengthening itself over time in the direction of these
forces. Poor postural and movement habits lead to shortening and thickening
of the connective tissue in specific areas.
Through the specific freeing and changing of the connective tissue, by
means of the specialized and unique Rolfing touch, in a certain sequence of
manual interventions, we allow the body to find its balance. The whole body
structure appears to be more integrated harmonic and fitting together.
The newest findings in Neurology point to the role of the connective tissue
in our movement intelligence. Hence the importance of working with the
connective tissue so that our brain, form and movement can be effectively
coordinated. It was from these findings that the modern "Rolfing Movement"
developed. Trained "Rolf Movement Practitioners" help their clients to
identify unbalanced and inefficient movement patterns and to develop more
fluid and coordinated possibilities for the daily life. Some clients
experience that increased freedom in movement and increased breathing
capacity dissolve emotional limitations.
The process begins with the analysis of the body structure of the client
and its movement qualities. The Rolfer observes the client sitting and
walking and tries to find out which shortenings and tensed up areas in the
body are preventing a harmonic balance. Pictures are taken to document the
progress of the work. Each session is planned and carried out according to
the individual needs of the client and the results obtained in the previous
sessions.
Originally the Rolfing process comprised of 10 sessions. Today -after many
years of research and praxis developments- this number can vary depending
on the individual desires and needs of the clients as well as on the
qualifications of the Rolfer.
The sessions last approximately one hour. Depending on the client's wishes
and possibilities the sessions can take place twice a week to once every
three weeks.
The Rolfers have developed along the years a unique and incomparable art
of "grasping" and "under-standing" the human body. They always treat the
whole body in its complexity, not only the localized symptom area. In each
session they introduce changes to last in the client's body. They measure
their success by the improvement of the posture and of the movement qualities.
Many clients expect to get rid of pain with Rolfing. Frequently pain
doesn't have any clear medical cause. A Rolfer goes less for the "cause" of
the pain than for taking the whole body into a higher level of integration.
In most cases the unpleasant symptoms decrease or totally disappear.
It is frequently expected that such a successful method must hurt ("no
pain- no gain"). Actually this idea was common among Rolfers in the past.
However, years of development have shown that painful Rolfing techniques
are unnecessary and ineffective. Nowadays most Rolfers try to work in a way
and with an intensity that respects the boundaries of the clients to give
them the control of the session.
Yes. The results usually not only stay but progress as well. Rolfers are
aware that fixations take place in the client's physical body, as well as
in their subjective experience. As a result of our way of life, our
body-awareness is insufficiently developed but it can be learned during the
Rolfing-series. An improved body-awareness often leads to positive
development of the body structure and psyche.
Stress, accidents and the aging process work negatively on the structure.
Therefore, after some time, it is convenient to have some additional
sessions.

>> Rolfing can change the structure of a person in a short time.
>> With more flexibility and an improved sense
of balance the person stands upright with less effort,
moves more gracefully and breathes more freely.
>> Pain becomes less frequent.
Rolfing was created by the American biochemist Dr. Ida P. Rolf. In contrast
to other manual therapies, that treat the body symptom by symptom, she
wanted to improve the complex whole structure of the body and because of
this she named her system "Structural Integration".
Rolfing is based on the idea that our body is not a machine made out of
separate parts. It considers the ability of the body to change its form seamlessly to adapt to an ever-changing environment. The extent to which our
body not only preserves, but also develops its form, is the extent of its
health, physical well being and feeling of freedom.
The shape of our exterior Gestalt is affected by many factors during our
development genetic inheritance, acquired poor habits of posture and
movement (for example slouching for a long time) and traumatic
occurrences (small and big accidents, emotional and physical stresses).
When our body is not balanced to an optimum, we move less fluidly, lightly
and elegantly and breathe with more difficulty and shallower than
we needed to. This way we experience a "shrinking" of our physical and
emotional vitality. Our whole appearance, our sensation of physical well-
being and our success stay behind our possibilities. We can develop chronic
tensional pains and other unpleasant symptoms.
Shortenings in the form, in the movements, in the breathing and in the
vitality will diminish.

Also sometime after the successful results have been naturally integrated, the
Rolfing process can be repeated aiming towards new goals.
